Located adjacent to the magical Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nyiragongo is an active strato-volcano with an elevation of 3,470 meters above sea level. It is 12 kilometers north of Goma town and Lake Kivu west of the boarder of Rwanda.
The volcano partly overlaps with two older volcanoes – Baratu and Shaheru and is also surrounded by hundreds of small volcanic cinder cones from flank eruptions.
The mountain offers one of the best experiences to tourists. You will live to talk about it for the rest of your life. The adventure starts with a pick up from Kigali International airport, ascend to Mount. Nyiragongo and descend back to Kibati ranger post. Exit through Kigali airport on the 3rd day.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali city to Goma town.
After arriving at Kigali International airport, you will be picked by our professional driver / guide and enjoy a drive around the city. It is here that you will visit the local markets, genocide memorial grounds, religious centers and any other places worth your attention.
Relax for a lunch break at any hotel of your choice before embarking on the drive to Goma town. Along the way, you will enjoy green vegetation cover, rolling hills and beautiful landscape. Pick the Nyiragongo hiking permits from the boarder point and then proceed to your booked hotel or lodge for relaxation and overnight.
Day 2: Mount. Nyiragongo hiking.
Wake up early and have yourself a delicious morning breakfast and proceed to Kibati Ranger post at the mountain base where Nyiragongo hiking adventure begins from. Book a few porters from here and begin the climb.
Hiking takes about five to seven hours to reach top of the mountain depending on the ability and walking speed of the hiking team. Enjoy spectacular photographic moments on top of the summit before dinner relaxation and overnight at Nyiragongo Cabin shelters.
Day 3: Descend from Mount. Nyiragongo and return to Kigali city. Departure.
After a delicious morning breakfast, take as many pictures of the glowing lava as your camera can contain and then start your journey down the mountain. Continue to Kigali city via Goma town as soon as you reach bottom of the mountain. There is an option of having a tour around Goma city and see places that were affected by several eruptions of the mountain.
After reaching Kigali city and time is still on your side you can embark on a drive around the city and maybe see what you could have missed on day 1 of the safari.
