Travel to the land of a thousand hills – Rwanda and visit one of the unique national parks across the country including Volcanoes national park where you will engage in gorilla and golden monkey trekking. These two, are rare species of primates that are so attractive and most sought after.
While in this park, you will discover other primates, bird species and plant species among others. The rolling hills and short city tour around Kigali offer unforgettable memories too.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival and drive to Volcanoes National Park.
You will be welcomed at the airport by our safari driver / guide who will take you through a quick briefing session about this 4 days Rwanda gorilla trekking & golden monkey safari. Later head to Volcanoes national park, a journey that takes about 3 hours on a scenic winding road. This park inhabits five of eight volcanoes that make up the great Virunga massif.
It also shelters the only surviving endangered mountain gorillas and a historical destination where Dian Fossey began her primate conservation work, that later led to the formation of Karisimbi research center which is still a popular gorilla conservation center.
Dian was a researcher and primatologist who saved gorillas from merciless in the early 1980s. She was later murdered by unknown people at her camp. On arrival in Volcanoes National Park, you will head to the lodge and rest.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking.
Have breakfast and then drive to the trail head for briefing and this can be led by either park rangers or head guide. Your gorilla permits will be checked and assignment of the park ranger and gorilla family to trek will follow. This ranger will lead you to the dense forest to search for these primates and locating them depends on their movements or where they spent a night but you will enjoy their presence during a one hour interaction.
The huge silverback will be practicing its leadership skills, while the mothers will be breastfeeding, and the juveniles swing from one tree to another to get fruits. You will later return to the lodge for lunch; and later you have an option of visiting the Iby’Iwachu cultural village to learn about the rich Kinyarwanda culture.
Day 3: Golden monkey trekking.
Have another briefing at the park headquarters to know more about these beautiful primates and you’ll be told the specific regulations and guidelines to adhere to while trekking the golden monkeys.
Golden monkey tracking takes about 2 to 3 hours but will be truly worthwhile and memorable. In case you are lucky, have a chance of spotting other primates as well, different bird species, trees and so much more. You will return to the lodge for your lunch and leisure.
Day 4: Drive to Kigali, short city tour and departure.
Drive back to Kigali city after breakfast on this last day where you will take a short city tour like visiting the genocide memorial center, local markets, craft markets, Palace museum among others. Later after lunch or in the evening, you will head to the airport for an outbound flight.
